This guide will help you test Syfer's functionalities. Syfer is designed not to interfere with your everyday life - we WANT to be in the background protecting your privacy and security. However, these steps will help to give you the peace of mind that Syfer is hard at work.
Out of the box, Syfer comes with the following default settings:
- Privacy: Moderate
- Security: Moderate
- Parental Controls: Off
- Ad-Blocking: Off
To adjust your settings, you must sign up for the mobile app and pair your device by manually inputting the Device ID or scanning the QR code located on the bottom of your Syfer.
Test 1: Privacy Strong - Anonymity / VPN
First, open https://ipinfo.io
Validate that the location and IP address of your network is masked with our AWS, IBM, SoftLayer, Digital Ocean, Azure, etc. anonymizing servers.
Without Syfer, your source IP and location are available publicly (note your ISP and location).
Test 2: Speed Test
Speedtest results are subject to various factors - some speed test servers are optimal and have superior bandwidth, therefore yielding better results. Others, not so much...
Following these steps should yield accurate speed test results:
- Temporarily change your Syfer Security level to “Moderate” as “Strong” enables IPS which could add overhead for your Speedtest.
- If you want to run Speedtest while the VPN is on, turn Privacy to Strong. Please wait 30 seconds before you run the test.
- Open https://www.speedtest.net/ and try various Speedtest servers. Try to select servers with closer proximity to the VPN location that your Syfer is connected to.
- Always use the multi-connection option.
- Try alternative speed test sites such as fast.com for comparison.
Please remember that every network device on the path to the internet could bottleneck your bandwidth. When Tunnelshaper is enabled, your streaming services are NOT routed through the VPN tunnel and therefore are not capped by VPN speeds. This means that you can watch Netflix without concerning yourself with overhead and buffering.
Test 3: Ad-blocking
These websites are typically filled with trackers and advertisement banners. Validate that you no longer see any ads. Do you notice the empty spaces?
Note: Please make sure that you have cleared your cache. You could be seeing stagnant ads from previous visits to these pages.
Test 4: TunnelShaper™
Turn on the Tunnelshaper feature available under Privacy Strong. TunnelShaper is our patent-pending VPN technology that will bypass services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. This will allow you to stream, while still staying private using other services on the internet.
Open a streaming service - Netflix, Hulu, etc. Select your favorite movie or TV show.
Validate that you are able to stream through Syfer without disruption.
Test 5: Parental Controls
Select some categories of your choosing. Hit save. Then navigate to a website that you believe would fall under one of the blocked categories. For http websites, you will see a Syfer branded block page. For https websites, you will simply be unable to connect.
Test 6: Bypass Prevention (Advanced)
Try changing your local DNS settings to 188.8.131.52 on your laptop or workstation.
Repeat tests 3 through 5. Validate system restrictions are in place even after changing the local DNS settings.
Test 7: DNS Leak Test (Advanced)
Visit a DNS leak test website - we recommend https://www.dnsleaktest.com/
You should not see your ISPs DNS addresses in the report. As of now, you should only see Syfer IPs since our infrastructure is hosted on AWS, IBM, SoftLayer, Digital Ocean, Azure, etc.
