Feature Update: July 18, 2019
Privacy
Moderate (Recommended):
DNS traffic is encrypted and routed via the SyferDNS network. Using DNS-over-TLS, your DNS traffic is encrypted to prevent eavesdropping and manipulation. This service is lightweight and will not affect speed or performance - a great fit for users who do not want to sacrifice performance for added privacy.
Strong:
- With TunnelShaper enabled: Leverages the Syfer global VPN network and uses our patent-pending smart VPN technology to bypass certain services (streaming websites such as Netflix) to avoid disruptions in service. Recommended for users that want a VPN with minimal interference in their online experience.
- With TunnelShaper disabled: For our most privacy-conscious users, disabling Tunnelshaper will have all traffic encrypted and routed via the Syfer VPN backbone.
As with all VPN services, some overhead is to be expected when using “Strong Privacy.” As our global VPN footprint continues to grow, we expect performance to continue to improve.
Security
Off:
Not recommended.
Moderate: (Recommended):
Your network is protected using SyferDNS AI and threat intelligence feeds. This provides a high degree of security with minimal interference on your network.
Strong:
Provides the protection available under our “Moderate” setting plus our added Intrusion Prevention System (Suricata). With Suricata IPS we curate signature rulesets and push updates on a daily basis to protect against viruses, trojans, ransomware, and a wide variety of malware. This service is resource-intensive and may affect the bandwidth of your network. Recommended for users that want top security at any cost!
Parental Controls
Categories:
Simply click the categories that you would like to block access to on your network and hit save. Websites categorized under said category will not be able to be accessed when in effect. Please note that http websites will reflect the Syfer-branded splash page when accessed while https websites will simply be unable to connect.

Safe Search: Enforces “safe search” across a variety of search engines (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, etc.)
Safe YouTube: Prevents access to inappropriate YouTube content. Note that this relies on YouTube user ratings and categorizations of content and may not be 100% effective.
Ad-blocking
Network-level ad and tracker blocking. Please note that this functions differently than browser-based ad blockers. Browser-based leverages javascript intervention while we take the approach on the IP and DNS level. Some applications, such as Twitter and YouTube, cannot have their ads blocked using Syfer as it is developed into the functionality of their service and doing so would jeopardize functionality.
Disarm Syfer
Turns off all Syfer functionality.
Device Info:
- Device ID: Can also be found on the bottom of your device. This is the number associated with your Syfer account and will be useful in troubleshooting any issues you may encounter.
- Firmware Version: Displays the firmware version present on your device.
- Latest Version: Displays the latest firmware version available (this will match the firmware version number for most users as Syfer automatically retrieves the latest firmware available).
- Delete Device: Removes the Syfer hardware with the associated Device ID from the mobile app. Please note that a device may only be tied to a single mobile account login at a time. If deleted, you will no longer be able to manage the feature on your Syfer.
